5 Requirements for Canadian Citizenship

1. Permanent Resident Status

You must be a permanent resident (PR) of Canada with status that has not been revoked.

2. Physical Presence (1,095 Days)

You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years before your application. Use our citizenship calculator to check if you qualify.

3. Income Tax Filing

You must have filed income taxes in Canada for at least 3 of the 5 tax years before your application, including filing even if you had no income.

4. Language Proficiency

Applicants aged 18-54 must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French at CLB/NCLC level 4 or higher.

5. Knowledge of Canada

Who Is Exempt from the Test?

  • Applicants under 18 years old
  • Applicants 55 years or older

Application Process

  1. Verify you meet all eligibility requirements
  2. Gather required documents (CoPR, PR card, language proof, tax records)
  3. Submit application online through the IRCC portal
  4. Pay the processing fee ($630 CAD for adults)
  5. Wait for IRCC to process your application (12-18 months)
  6. Take the citizenship test when invited
  7. Attend the citizenship ceremony and take the Oath
